Obituary for Wilbert L. Peoples

Wilbert Lee Peoples passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 7th, 2018 at Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, Brooklyn, NY. Funeral services were held on Friday, November 16, 2018 at Shoulders Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Interment followed in the Church cemetery.

He was born March 4, 1946. He was preceded in death by his parents, Leroy and Sarah Peoples and brother Oliver Neal Peoples.
Wilbert attended Williston Senior High School. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Shoulders Branch Missionary Baptist Church. Like many young adults in the Castle Hayne community, Wilbert’s working career began under the supervision of his dad at Carolina Meat Processing Company. Soon thereafter, Wilbert moved to New York City seeking better opportunities and employment. Wilbert worked as an inspector for the New York City Health Department and later obtained employment as an International Longshoreman where he worked for over 20 years. While living in New York, he later became a devoted member of Bethany Baptist Church in Brooklyn.

Wilbert married Rosa Brockington on January 7, 1967. Wilbert truly adored Rose and they enjoyed the simple things in life such as a walk in the park and ice cream on a warm summer day. Wilbert was a very kind, compassionate “free spirited” man. He lived life to the fullest, “walked to the beat of his own drum” and found joy in serving his fellow man. His love for people was shown by the way he took care of the elderly and others in his community. He frequently took his neighbors to doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping and other places throughout the city. Wilbert showed his southern hospitality as he shared vegetables grown in his garden that he would grow right there in the heart of Brooklyn.

Wilbert’s faith in God was strong. It was demonstrated best over the last few months as he continued to encourage his family and friends not to worry about him. “I am fine”, he would say, “I am just waiting for the Great White Horse to carry me home”.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his loving wife, Rosa Peoples; children: Sammy Lee Carr (Belinda) Leland, NC; Angela Carr(Brooklyn, NY); Timothy Peoples(Brooklyn, NY); Kellie Peoples(Brooklyn, NY); grandchildren: Shantea Peterson, Shaniquah Peterson, Jazmine Carr, Jihad Carr, Saquan Carr, Shaniqua Marshall, Shangela Johnson, Karrina Copeland, LaMark Robinson, Daquan Peoples and twelve great grandchildren; siblings: Ernestine Bonds(Hubert), Leroy Peoples, Jr.,(Peggy), Ruth Lawrence(Larry) Jeffrey Peoples(Emily), Gloria Mckinney(Clifton), Deames Peoples (Kim); aunts: Fannie Thomas and Masako Smith; in-laws: Ruth Peoples (Oliver), Hattie Bell Beatty, Ethel B. Williams, Aaron Brockington, Seina Brockington: uncle in-laws: J. D. Daniels (Sophia), Ceasar Daniels (Jessie), and Mack Daniels. Wilbert also leaves to cherish his memories a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
