Obituary for Willie Lee Dixon, Sr.

Willie Lee Dixon, son of the late Juanita Monroe Dixon and Isaac Murphy Dixon, Jr. was born on March 17, 1951, in Wilmington, North Carolina. He departed this earthly life on Friday, November 9, 2018. Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 14, 2018 at St. Phillip AME Church. Interment followed in Masonboro Colored Cemetery.

Willie Lee grew up in the Taylor Homes Community with a lot of his friends and classmates. He was educated in the New Hanover County Public School System, graduating from New Hanover High School in the Class of 1970. While at New Hanover, “Bean Dixon” as he was so fondly called by his friends and classmates, played basketball and continued his classmate’s friendship until his demise. Willie Lee loved his class and was a very faithful member of the reunion committee. There was nothing that was asked of him that he did not delight in doing. He was famous for supplying the class with his brown dog candy. When his health began to decline and he would miss a class meeting, he would be making a phone call to find out what happened at the meeting and what did the class need him to do.

After graduation, Willie Lee enlisted in the US Army. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne Division based at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. He received the National Service Medal, Parachute Badge and was a Sharp Shooter. Willie Lee was also a faithful and dedicated member of St. Phillip AME Church. At St. Phillip he was a member of the Sons of Allen, a loyal and devoted Sunday School member and a member of Class #10 with Delores Riley as his leader. Willie Lee supported all activities of the church and assisted where needed. Willie Lee was also a member of Crystal Springs Lodge #793 PHA F&AM of Leland, North Carolina.

On September 9, 2007, Willie Lee married Bertha Gordon. He never met a stranger and would help you along the way. Truly his living was not in vain. He will be greatly missed by his family, classmates, friends and church family.

He leaves to cherish very fond memories: his wife, Bertha Dixon of Southport, NC; his children, Willie Dixon, Jr. of Wilmington, NC, Demetria Dixon of Fayetteville, NC and Amos Hardy of Southport, NC; five grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Monroe of Wilmington, NC and Janet Ford (Harold) of York, PA; two sisters-in-law, Jean Parker and Judy Gordon both of Southport, NC; two aunts, Geraldine Durant and Delores Walker both of Wilmington, NC; one uncle, Earl Dixon (Ruth) of Virginia; other relatives and friends, including a special friend, Sandra Jones, his beloved Class of 1970 and his St. Phillip AME Church Family.
